“There have always been onions, grannie made a nice braid and hung it up.”

The common onion (allium cepa) is a plant of the leek family. Cutting onions releases sulphur compounds that irritate our eyes and cause tears. The cultivation technique of cutting onions is passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter. Along the matriline, I follow the discarded onion skins of my family. Trying to get deeper, layer by layer, to my onion-cutting ancestors. Leathery-skinned, garden soil under my fingernails. Do we have a common core?

Natalie Campbell (AUT) works as a transdisciplinary artist at the intersection of language and movement art, as a performer, author and teacher. Influenced by Axis Syllabus, Contact Improvisation and somatic practices, she works with the KIT Ensemble Vienna, teaches at Shake the Break/Impulstanz and has performed in Vienna and Portugal. She has published two independent publications with text/rahmen and numerous articles in magazines and anthologies. Studied MA Creative Writing in Klagenfurt and at Teachers Track of Movement Artisans in Berlin.

In relation to the global rise of nationalist movements, the artist's project We can go to the woods* examines women's* gestures of resistance against nationalist movements and hierarchical and hegemonic structures. Based on the unprocessed estates and writings of the American anarchist Kate Austin (1861 -1902) and the “Viennese” anarchists of the early 20th century - Sonja Grossmann, Agathe Löwe, Olga Misař and Vilma Ritschel - the performance brings together women* to perform an archive of gestures for and with each other. The project focuses on the question of how individual and collective movements of resistance, both visible and invisible, are passed on over time and stored in the body and what forms of solidarity can emerge in the process.

Veronika Hösch (AUT) lives and works as an artist, filmmaker and sessionista* in Vienna. For several years, they have been dealing with questions of precarious working and production conditions, classism, archives, queer lives of women* and intimate friendships. The body as archive itself becomes a performance stage: a continuous site of gestures that aims to explore cultural, social and economic spheres and hierarchies. Transgenerational embodiments and their processes are real and speculative spaces of negotiation in her artistic work, which become visible and audible in Hösch's media installations and performances. They were awarded the Förderungspreis Bildende Kunst in 2017 and the Theodor Körper Preis in 2019. In 2025, Hösch received the State Scholarship for Media Art.

How does our body change when it is being watched? Between gazes, labels, and projections, this solo explores the physical responses to being seen— in public spaces, under the eyes of others, in the digital age. Movement, posture, and skin remember the traces of the gaze. Who decides what is seen? And who do we become through that gaze?

Vito Vidovič Bintchende (SLO/AUT) Studied at the Music and Arts University of the city of Vienna, at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and at London Contemporary Dance School. He has presented his choreographies and co-creations at various festivals and platforms such as Share, Choreoloop and Biennale. As a dancer he has collaborated with Alleyne Dance, Regina van Berkel, Igor x Moreno, Riccardo Buscarini, Marcos Morau, Andrea Constanzo Martin, Caroline Finn, Mathew Robinson and June Campbell Davies. Interdisciplinary work with the Burgtheater Vienna and the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra. 2022 to 2024 member of the National Dance Company Wales. He has been teaching at Weiterbildungsinstitut Wien since 2015.

AAR Term 25 | MINI-Residency

In the run-up to AAR Term 25, an invitation to the AAR MINI residency for choreographic research was extended to Ruth Burmann.

The dance teacher, dancer and choreographer Ruth Burmann, who works in Salzburg, is coming to the T*H Studios with her colleague Helena Zwiauer for several days of research. In her dance project with the working title “Auf_bruch”, she will go on a “search for clues” and research the topics of obstacles, strokes of fate and disruptions as sources of potential, growth and development. This will result in a multimedia dance performance in 2025. Contemporary dance, music, acting, film and audio recordings will be used to tell the emotional and physical journey of two protagonists who are abandoned by those closest to them and suddenly have to fend for themselves in order to survive. The recovery of the will to live and vitality (resilience) form the narrative level of the choreography.

Ruth Burmann (AUT) studied music and dance education (specializing in dance) at the Mozarteum University. She trained at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD). She has been a lecturer at the Mozarteum University since 1999 and worked at the Thomas Bernhard Institute from 1999-2008. As a dancer she was a member of the Susan Quinn Dance Company, Robert Wechsler (Palindrom), Beda Percht (Cateracts) Hubert Lepka (Lawine Torren) and the Donna Jewell Company. Her choreographic work is characterized by her collaboration with artists such as Frey Faust, Bert Gstettner, Donna Jewell, Susan Quinn and Helmi Vent. Artistic and artistic-educational projects have taken her to the USA, Cyprus, Malta and Turkey as well as to Germany, the Czech Republic and Taiwan.
