ARTIST AT RESORT | TERM 24

<<< deutsch

For the residency project Artist At Resort | Term 24, three artists have been selected to develop their new choreography and performance projects. They will be accompanied by mentors during a week-long rehearsal process. The results will be presented at the final showcase at the end of October 2024.

Three evenings filled with a choreographic program by young performance positions. The topics cover content like culture clash, suffer and hope as well as ironic narcissism. All three projects provide a description of the state of human existence in today's world. The fourth item on the program is the Perform-Dance-Screen program started by Bert Gstettner in 2023 with the presentation of a selected dance film. A cordial invitation to the:

PROJECT 1

Take Taek
Conception, Performance  Yuwol June C. (KOR/AUT)
Mentoring  Imani Rameses (USA/AUT)

Photos: Hanna Fasching for B.G./T*H, Bildrecht

Take Taek explores experiences of migration through early encounters with Taekwondo, a South Korean martial art, outside of South Korea. These encounters raise questions about cultural ownership, identity, and the performance of “otherness.” The piece looks at how martial arts, especially within pop culture, have been used and how they migrate and transform in the context of Asian identity. The work examines the fine line between imitation, cultural appropriation, and reclaiming identity. Drawing from personal memories, the project asks: “How do we come to own a culture, or is it even possible?”

PROJECT 2

The Other Life
Conception, Performance, Music, Texts  Matthias Mollner (AUT)
Texts  Judith Schoßböck (AUT)
Mentoring  Bert Gstettner (AUT)

Photos: Hanna Fasching for B.G./T*H, Bildrecht

In his performance, Matthias Mollner addresses the reality of chronically seriously ill people who are often invisible or made invisible in society. Based on personal experiences - his partner suffers from a severe form of the multisystem disease ME/CFS - Mollner develops a work that delves into the existential dimension of the topic. This shows the dark sides of life such as suffering, isolation and dying as well as the strength, dreams and hopes of those affected and their relatives.

PROJECT 3

Poor Guy
Conception, Performance  Luigi Guerrieri (ITA/AUT)
Mentoring  Alberto Cissello (ITA/AUT)

Photos: Hanna Fasching for B.G./T*H, Bildrecht

POOR GUY is a narcissistic project that beats a narcissistic world with its own weapons. This performance is about me, me, me, ME. ME! I'm the poor guy. I am the poor pan-sexual gypsy. POOR GUY is a performative autoethnography with the aim to creat narratives of self-realization and identity-finding through trauma plots and victimhood.

RECOMMENDATION: After the brilliant first showing of "Poor Guy" by Luigi Guerrieri, the theater version is coming soon - don't miss! Dates on  February 12th, 14th, 15th, 2025 at 7.30 pm at Petersplatz 1, 1010 Vienna | Tickets >>>

PERFORM-DANCE-SCREEN

Doppelgänger
Dance film by the Company Onze Chambres (DEU/FRA)

Another new feature of the AAR Werkschau program is the presentation of a selected short dance film. With this, Bert Gstettner is responding to a growing demand for choreographic work in the film sector. Bert Gstettner on Doppelgänger: "When and where do you encounter a doppelganger? Similarity and recognition as a surreal game, ironically acted out by two dancers as choreography. Two sides of the doppelganger become recognizable: desire and the loneliness of the appetite for each other. Which is actually the doppelganger in recognition? Mirroring, unification or duplication?” In the presence of the dancer/choreographer Daniel Rakovsky.

AAR Term 24 Carte Blanche, August 2024
Farnoush A. Nik (IRN/FRA)

AB is a dance creation which explores the artist's internal conflict between physical freedom and mental constraints after leaving their home country. The work starts with a body seeking freedom, while the head limits its movements. As the environment changes, this is followed by a body becoming frozen, unable to fully embrace the newfound liberty for movement. This visual metaphor represents the paradox of being physically present in a space of opportunity while the mind remains trapped by long-term limitations. The project had its first try-out in July 2023, during the art residency at LakeStudio Berlin.
